FreeTopoMaps.
FreeTopoMaps is a free creative utility by Marshall Bishop that brings topography into a designer's workflow. It turns real landscapes into contour linework and downloadable vector assets for artwork, products and laser engraving.

From terrain to asset
Contour lines connect points of equal elevation. Drawn together, they describe a landscape as pure line, which is exactly what a designer, a print studio or a laser engraver can use. FreeTopoMaps exists to make that step from a place to a usable vector file quick and free.
The same contour artwork that describes a mountain can become a poster, a product pattern, a brand texture or an engraving, and it stays editable because it is vector linework rather than an image.
The 3D exhibit on Media Bishop
The exhibit tells the transformation in four beats: Landscape, Trace, Lift and Create. The landscape is presented as a laser-cut birch plywood model, one sheet per contour level, with charred cut edges and laser smoke staining. A scanning plane traces the contours, then the sheets lift apart so the structure can be seen level by level. Finally the lines are plotted onto a sheet of paper and the study can be downloaded as an SVG with editable paths and a transparent background, at 12, 24 or 36 contour levels.
The terrain in the exhibit is a procedurally generated study, not a surveyed geographic location, and the download is the exhibit's own artwork rather than an export from FreeTopoMaps. The landscape, the floating contours and the downloaded SVG all come from the same height field.
Choosing a contour density
The number of contour levels changes the character of the artwork. Fewer levels give bold, widely spaced lines that read well from a distance and survive small sizes, engraving and cutting. More levels describe the terrain in finer detail and suit large prints and close viewing. The exhibit lets you compare 12, 24 and 36 levels on the same landscape before downloading.
Working with the SVG
Because contour art is vector linework, it can be opened in any vector editor such as Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer or Figma, and in laser software, then recolored, rescaled, clipped to a shape or combined with type without losing sharpness. A transparent background means the lines drop straight onto a layout, a product mockup or an engraving template.
Stacked contour levels are also how physical relief models are made: each level is cut from a separate sheet and layered, which is the construction the exhibit's plywood model shows.
Questions
Is FreeTopoMaps free?
Yes. FreeTopoMaps offers free topographic SVGs and downloadable assets for designers.
What can contour line art be used for?
Posters, product patterns, brand textures, laser engraving, cut-paper and plywood relief models, and any layout that needs a landscape described in line.
Is the landscape in the 3D exhibit a real place?
No. It is a procedurally generated terrain made for the exhibit. Use freetopomaps.io for real geographic areas.
